Fat Dissolving Treatments

Targeted Treatment for Localised Areas of Fat

Sometimes a small area of localised fat can remain despite otherwise stable weight and lifestyle.

Fat dissolving injections can be considered for selected areas where a modest reduction in localised fat may improve contour — particularly beneath the chin or in small areas of the body.

At ReNu Medical Aesthetics, treatment is doctor-led and individually planned following assessment by Dr Jackie. The aim is subtle improvement in contour rather than weight loss or dramatic body transformation.

What Are Fat Dissolving Injections?

Fat dissolving treatments involve injecting a solution directly into the subcutaneous fat of a carefully selected treatment area.

The treatment disrupts fat cells within that area, after which the resulting cellular material is gradually cleared by the body. Because the treatment is intended for localised fat deposits, it is not an alternative to weight loss and isn't suitable for treating generalised excess weight.

The amount that can safely and realistically be treated will depend on the area, your anatomy and the characteristics of the tissue.

Treatment Areas

Depending on individual assessment, treatment may be considered for areas including:

  • Under the chin / submental area
  • Small areas around the jawline
  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Bra-line / upper back
  • Inner or outer thighs

Not every area or type of fullness is suitable for injectable fat reduction.

For example, fullness beneath the chin may be caused by fat, skin laxity, anatomy — or a combination of these. Identifying the cause is important before deciding whether treatment is likely to help.

What to Expect

Consultation
Dr Jackie will assess the area you would like treated, your medical history, skin quality and what you hope to achieve. She will discuss whether fat dissolving treatment is appropriate and what degree of improvement is realistic.

Treatment
A series of small injections is placed into the targeted subcutaneous fat. The treatment technique and amount used will depend on the area being treated.

Downtime
Swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising should be expected following treatment. Swelling can sometimes be quite noticeable, particularly following treatment beneath the chin, and may persist for several days. Temporary firmness, altered sensation, itching or discomfort can also occur.

Results
Changes develop gradually rather than immediately as the treated area settles over the following weeks.

More than one treatment may be required. The number and interval of treatments will depend on the area, your response and whether further treatment is likely to provide worthwhile benefit.

Is Fat Dissolving Right for Me?

Fat dissolving treatment is most appropriate for small, localised areas of subcutaneous fat rather than general weight reduction. It may be worth considering if you are otherwise relatively weight-stable but have an area of fullness that remains disproportionate or bothersome.

It may not be the right treatment if the main issue is:

  • Significant skin laxity
  • Generalised excess weight
  • A large volume of fat
  • Anatomy rather than subcutaneous fat
  • An expectation of surgical-level body contouring

Sometimes another approach — including no treatment — will be more appropriate.

You don't need to decide how many treatments or how much product you need before consultation.

Fat Dissolving & Weight Management

Fat dissolving injections and medical weight management have very different purposes.

Medical weight management is intended to support overall weight reduction and longer-term weight management in suitable patients.

Fat dissolving treatment targets a specific, relatively small area of localised fat and is not a weight-loss treatment.

If both overall weight and a particular area of localised fat are concerns, it may make more sense to address weight management first and reassess the area once your weight is stable.

Our Approach to Body Contouring

 • Doctor-led assessment

 • Appropriate patient selection

 • Realistic expectations

 • Individual treatment planning

At ReNu, the starting point isn't how many vials can be injected.

Dr Jackie will first assess what is actually causing the contour you are concerned about and whether injectable fat reduction is likely to make a worthwhile difference.

The aim is a proportionate improvement while avoiding unnecessary treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fat cells that are successfully destroyed by treatment do not regenerate in the same way.

However, fat dissolving treatment does not prevent future weight gain. Remaining fat cells can enlarge if your weight increases, and ageing or changes in skin laxity can also alter the appearance of the area over time.

Maintaining a relatively stable weight therefore remains important.

Fat reduction is gradual rather than immediate.

The treated area initially becomes swollen, so it may temporarily look larger rather than smaller. Improvement develops over subsequent weeks as the swelling settles and the body processes the treated tissue.

Your response should be assessed before deciding whether another treatment is worthwhile.

There isn't a standard number that is appropriate for everyone.

Some people may achieve a satisfactory improvement following a small number of treatments, while others may require further sessions.

The number required depends on the area, amount of localised fat and individual response. If injectable treatment is unlikely to achieve your desired result, Dr Jackie will discuss that with you rather than simply recommending additional sessions.

The injections can cause stinging, burning, tenderness or discomfort, and the treated area can remain tender afterwards.

The experience varies according to the area treated and the individual.

Expected temporary effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and firmness within the treated area.

Other effects can include itching, temporary altered sensation or numbness.

Less common complications depend partly on the anatomical area and product used and will be discussed as part of your consultation and consent process before treatment.

It can be appropriate for some people with a localised pocket of submental fat.

However, not every “double chin” is primarily caused by fat. Skin laxity, muscle, jaw/chin structure and other anatomical factors can contribute to the appearance.

Dr Jackie will assess the area before recommending treatment.

No. Fat dissolving injections are intended for localised contouring, not overall weight reduction.

If excess weight is the principal concern, medical weight management may be a more appropriate starting point.

“I’d always been self-conscious about my double chin, even at my lowest weight. Dr Jackie assessed the area carefully and talked me through what treatment could realistically achieve. I’m delighted with the improvement.”
