Medical Weight Management

Personalised, Doctor-Led Support for Long-Term Weight Management

Managing weight can be difficult, and there is rarely a single approach that works for everyone.

At ReNu Medical Aesthetics, Dr Jackie provides confidential, doctor-led weight management consultations for adults who would like medical support with achieving and maintaining a healthier weight.

Your health, previous weight-loss experiences, lifestyle and goals are considered together to develop an individual plan focused not simply on losing weight, but on long-term health and sustainable weight management.

A Medical Approach to Weight Management

Weight management is about much more than willpower.

Appetite, metabolism, medical conditions, medications, hormonal changes, lifestyle and previous attempts at weight loss can all influence someone's ability to achieve and maintain a healthier weight.

Your consultation provides an opportunity to explore these factors and consider the approaches that may be appropriate for you.

Your individual plan may include:

  • Comprehensive medical and weight history
  • Review of previous weight-management approaches
  • Assessment of current health and relevant medical conditions
  • Discussion of nutrition, activity and lifestyle
  • Consideration of appropriate treatment options
  • Regular review of progress and tolerability
  • Planning for maintenance and longer-term weight management

Where prescription treatment is clinically appropriate, the available options, expected benefits, limitations and potential side effects will be discussed privately as part of your medical consultation.

Your Weight Management Journey

1. Initial Assessment

You'll complete a medical assessment before your consultation, allowing Dr Jackie to review your health, medication, previous weight-management history and goals.

2. Consultation with Dr Jackie

Your medical history, current health, weight journey and what you hope to achieve will be discussed.

This is also an opportunity to explore what has and hasn't worked for you previously.

3. Your Personalised Plan

If treatment is appropriate, Dr Jackie will discuss the available options with you and agree an individual plan.

There is no expectation that prescription treatment will be appropriate for everyone.

4. Ongoing Medical Review

Weight management isn't simply about starting treatment.

Regular reviews allow progress, tolerability, health and treatment goals to be reassessed and your plan adjusted where appropriate.

5. Maintenance of Long-Term Health

Reaching a target weight isn't necessarily the end of treatment.

Your longer-term plan may include maintaining weight loss, supporting healthy habits and considering how treatment should evolve as your needs change.

Is Medical Weight Management Right for Me?

Medical weight management is intended for people who meet appropriate clinical criteria and for whom treatment can be provided safely.

Suitability depends on factors including your current weight and BMI, medical history, existing medication and any weight-related health conditions.

Not everyone requesting treatment will be suitable, and sometimes another approach or involvement of your GP or another specialist may be more appropriate. An individual medical assessment is therefore required before any treatment is recommended.

Our Approach to Weight Management

 • Doctor-led care

 • Individual assessment

 • Ongoing medical review

 • Long-term perspective

At ReNu, medical weight management isn't a quick-fix programme or simply a prescription service.

The aim is to understand your individual circumstances, provide appropriate medical support and help you develop an approach to weight management that can work in the longer term.

Dr Jackie has personal experience of significant weight loss and understands many of the practical challenges involved in losing weight and maintaining that change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Suitability is assessed individually and depends on factors including BMI, medical history, existing health conditions, current medication and previous weight-management approaches.

A medical assessment is required before any treatment can be recommended.

There are now several approaches to medical weight management, and the available options continue to evolve.

If prescription treatment is appropriate for you, Dr Jackie will explain the currently available options during your consultation, including how they work, their potential benefits, limitations and side effects.

You do not need to choose a medication before your assessment.

There is no amount of weight loss that can be guaranteed.

Individual responses vary considerably and depend on many factors, including your starting weight, health, treatment, lifestyle and how your body responds over time.

Your progress will be reviewed individually rather than measured against a promised target.

All prescription medicines can cause side effects.

The potential effects vary according to the treatment being considered and your individual health. These will be discussed with you before prescribing so that you can make an informed decision.

If treatment is started, tolerability will form part of your ongoing medical review.

There isn't a single treatment duration that is right for everyone.

Obesity and excess weight can require long-term management, and stopping an effective treatment can be associated with weight regain.

Your treatment should therefore be reviewed according to your progress, health, tolerability and longer-term goals rather than automatically stopped when you reach a particular number on the scales.

Reaching your target is an opportunity to reassess rather than simply stop everything.

Dr Jackie will discuss maintenance, lifestyle, your ongoing health and whether treatment should continue, change or eventually be withdrawn.

The aim is maintaining the health benefits of weight loss, not repeatedly losing and regaining weight.

Your care includes medical assessment and ongoing review with Dr Jackie.

Reviews provide an opportunity to discuss progress, side effects, concerns, lifestyle and whether your treatment plan remains appropriate.

For most people, physical activity forms an important part of maintaining health during weight management.

The type and amount of exercise appropriate for you will depend on your health, fitness and individual circumstances.

Medical conditions do not necessarily prevent treatment, but they may affect which approaches are safe and appropriate.

Your medical history and medication will therefore be reviewed before treatment. In some circumstances, Dr Jackie may recommend involving your GP or usual specialist.

Prescription weight-management medicines are not appropriate during pregnancy and some are also unsuitable while breastfeeding or when planning pregnancy.

Your individual circumstances will be discussed as part of your medical assessment.

Prescription weight-management treatments are not suitable during pregnancy. Some medicines also need to be stopped several weeks or months before trying to conceive.

If you are planning a pregnancy, please tell Dr Jackie so that your treatment can be reviewed and you can be advised when it is appropriate to stop medication and begin trying to conceive.

A Personal Perspective I know how life-changing significant weight loss can be, and also how challenging maintaining that change can be. My own experience means I understand that successful weight management is rarely as simple as being told to eat less and move more.”
