Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses controlled micro-injury to stimulate the skin's natural repair response.

What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling uses multiple fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels within the skin.
This triggers a wound-healing response involving the production and remodelling of collagen and other components of the skin's supporting structure.
Depending on your skin and treatment plan, microneedling may help improve the appearance of:

Single-use sterile needle cartridges are used for each treatment.

Treatment
The Dermapen 4 is passed systematically over the treatment area at individually selected settings to create controlled micro-channels within the skin.
Treatment intensity will vary according to your skin and the objective of treatment.
Downtime
Redness, warmth and sensitivity are expected following microneedling and can resemble mild sunburn. Mild swelling, dryness, tightness or flaking can also occur over the following days.
The degree of downtime varies with treatment intensity and individual skin response.
Your skin barrier is temporarily more vulnerable following treatment, so appropriate aftercare and sun protection are particularly important.
Results
Skin may initially look fresher as post-treatment redness settles, but the changes we are aiming for from collagen remodelling develop more gradually over the following weeks and months.
Some concerns may benefit from a course of treatments rather than a single session.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
There isn't one course that is right for every skin.
For general skin rejuvenation, a short course may be appropriate. Concerns such as acne scarring or more significant textural change may require a different treatment intensity or number of sessions.
Dr Jackie will recommend a plan based on what you are actually trying to improve, rather than automatically selling a standard course.
Progress can then be reassessed before deciding whether further treatment is worthwhile.

Is Microneedling Right for Me?
Microneedling is particularly useful when collagen remodelling and improvement in skin texture are the objectives.
But not every skin concern needs microneedling.
If your main issue is surface dullness or mild roughness, diamond microdermabrasion or a professional skin peel may be sufficient.
For dehydration or some age-related changes in skin quality, medical-grade skincare, skin boosters or regenerative injectable treatments may be more appropriate.
And for almost everyone considering procedural skin treatment, an appropriate home skincare routine and daily sun protection remain an important part of maintaining skin health.

Microneedling can feel prickly, warm or uncomfortable, particularly when greater treatment depths are required.
The sensation varies according to the area treated, treatment intensity and individual sensitivity. Measures to improve comfort can be discussed where appropriate.
Treatment time depends on the area and the treatment being undertaken.
A straightforward facial microneedling appointment will usually be shorter than treatment involving several areas or additional modalities such as LED phototherapy.
Allow enough time for assessment, preparation, treatment and appropriate aftercare rather than focusing purely on the time the Dermapen is in contact with your skin.
This depends on your starting skin and what you are trying to improve.
General skin rejuvenation may require fewer treatments than established acne scarring or more significant textural concerns.
Your response can be reviewed during treatment rather than assuming everyone requires the same course.

Microneedling is generally well tolerated when appropriately performed, but it is not risk-free.
Expected effects include redness, sensitivity and temporary inflammation. Less common problems can include infection, prolonged irritation, pigmentary change or reactivation of certain skin conditions.
