Fine Lines & Wrinkles

A Personalised Approach to Facial Ageing

Lines and wrinkles are a normal part of facial ageing. Some develop gradually through changes in skin quality, while others are strongly influenced by the repeated movement of the muscles we use to smile, frown and express ourselves.

At ReNu Medical Aesthetics, Dr Jackie offers a doctor-led consultation for fine lines and wrinkles, considering your facial anatomy, skin quality, muscle movement and what you would personally like to improve.

The aim is not to remove every line or change the character of your face, but to understand what is contributing to the changes that concern you and discuss the treatment options that may be appropriate.

Understanding Expression Lines

Some facial lines are particularly influenced by repeated muscle movement.

Common concerns include:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Lines around the nose
  • Fine lines around the mouth
  • Chin dimpling
  • Changes in brow position
  • Downward pull around the mouth

Over time, lines that initially appear only during facial expression can become visible when the face is at rest. Skin quality, sun exposure, genetics, facial structure and natural ageing also contribute, which is why not every wrinkle should be approached in the same way.

Your Consultation

Dr Jackie will assess your face both at rest and during expression.

This allows consideration of:

  • Which muscles are contributing to the lines that concern you
  • Your natural facial proportions and asymmetry
  • Brow and eyelid position
  • Skin quality and elasticity
  • Previous aesthetic treatments
  • Your medical history
  • The degree of change you would actually like

Following assessment, the available options — including whether treatment is appropriate at all — will be discussed with you. Where a prescription medicine is being considered, this will only be prescribed following an appropriate medical assessment.

Natural Movement Matters

For many patients, the concern isn't simply whether a line can be reduced — it is how much natural movement and expression they want to retain.

Dr Jackie’s approach is conservative and individualised, taking into account your facial anatomy, muscle movement and treatment goals. The objective is not necessarily to remove every line. For many people, a successful result means looking rested and refreshed while still looking completely like themselves.

What to Expect

Assessment
Your facial anatomy, muscle movement, medical history and treatment goals are reviewed before any treatment is recommended.

Treatment
If treatment is appropriate and you choose to proceed, the proposed treatment, expected effects, limitations and relevant risks will be explained beforehand.

Results
The timing and duration of results depend upon the treatment selected, the area treated and your individual response.

Review
Where appropriate, a follow-up review allows the result to be assessed once treatment has taken effect.

Small Areas & Facial Refinement

Facial assessment may also identify smaller areas where treatment could be considered, including:

  • Brow position
  • Bunny lines
  • Lip position when smiling
  • Gummy smile
  • Chin dimpling
  • Downward pull at the corners of the mouth

These treatments are not automatically appropriate for everyone. Facial anatomy, muscle balance and the potential effect on normal expression and function need to be considered before treatment.

Lower Face & Jawline Assessment

Prominent masseter muscles can contribute to a wider or more square lower face in some people. Where this is a cosmetic concern, Dr Jackie can assess the lower-face anatomy and discuss whether treatment to alter the appearance of the masseter region is appropriate.

For jaw clenching, bruxism or TMJ-related symptoms, please see our dedicated Bruxism & TMJ section.

Other Doctor-Led Treatment Pathways

Some treatments using similar medical principles are undertaken for medical rather than purely cosmetic concerns.

At ReNu, these have their own assessment and treatment pathways:

  • Excessive Sweating / Hyperhidrosis
  • Bruxism & TMJ-Related Jaw Clenching
  • Migraine Treatment

Our Approach to Fine Lines & Wrinkles

 • Doctor-led assessment

 • Conservative treatment

 • Facial balance

 • Natural expression

At ReNu, treatment begins with understanding your face rather than selecting a number of areas from a menu. Dr Jackie will discuss what can realistically be achieved, what treatment may be appropriate and, equally importantly, when leaving an area untreated may produce the better result.

Fine Lines & Wrinkles FAQs

The aim of treatment planning at ReNu is to preserve a natural appearance. How much movement is retained depends upon your anatomy, the concern being addressed and the treatment approach agreed during consultation. Dr Jackie will discuss your preferences before treatment.

If an injectable treatment is selected, you may experience brief discomfort at individual injection points.

Most facial injectable procedures are relatively quick, but individual sensitivity varies.

This depends on the treatment selected. If a prescription treatment is recommended following consultation, Dr Jackie will explain when its effects would be expected to develop and when the result should be assessed.

This depends on the treatment selected, treatment area and individual response.

Temporary injectable treatments require repeat treatment if you wish to maintain their effect, but there is no requirement to continue treatment.

All medical treatments carry potential risks, which will be discussed with you before treatment.

Most side effects following facial injectable treatment are temporary and relate to the injection itself or the effect on nearby muscles. These can include bruising, swelling, headache, temporary asymmetry or unwanted weakness of an adjacent muscle, such as temporary eyelid or brow drooping.

Very rarely, botulinum toxin can have effects beyond the area treated and cause symptoms of botulism. These can include generalised muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and breathing difficulties. If these symptoms develop following treatment, urgent medical attention is required.

Dr Jackie uses appropriately sourced, licensed prescription medicines and will assess your medical history, suitability and individual treatment plan before prescribing.

These symptoms require a different assessment from purely cosmetic facial treatment.

Please see our dedicated Bruxism & TMJ section for information about Dr Jackie’s approach to jaw clenching and related symptoms.

Response to treatment can vary between individuals and over time. If you notice a change in the effectiveness or duration of a treatment you have previously received, this should be discussed with Dr Jackie rather than simply increasing treatment automatically.
