Hyaluronidase or Hyalase is a chemical that helps to break down hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronidase is a prescription medication. Therefore it can only be administered by a licensed prescriber such as a doctor or a dentist. Without a prescription, a beautician can only procure this drug through unregulated channels. Therefore, the authenticity of the hyaluronidase they use is questionable, putting you at risk of possible medical complications.
Injectable fillers such as Juvederm, Alixain, Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that attracts and holds water in the skin - giving the fillers their plumping volumizing effect.
High quality filler products prove to be much more responsive to dissolving. Some cheaper filler products, which contain other constituents within them give less favourable results to dissolving.
Hyaluronidase is injected just beneath the surface of the skin using a very fine needle to the target area containing the HA based filler. Following treatment the overlying skin should return back in time to the condition prior to the dermal filler treatment. The skin may appear more wrinkled, deflated or loose, often within a day of having hyaluronidase injected. These differences may be more magnified the longer the filler has been in situ.
On the day we will need to perform a patch test then wait 20 minutes to ensure no allergic reaction occurs for the dissolving agent. This involves injecting a tiny volume of the drug just under the skin on your forearm, followed by a period of observation to ensure a local allergic reaction does not occur.
The dissolving agent is quoted to continue dissolving for up to 5 days after the injection. We therefore recommend that if further replacement filler is required, it can be re-injected again 7-14 days after treatment to avoid the new filler being dissolved.
What to expect?
You may have had local anaesthetic applied and so you may feel numbness or tingling in the treated area. Because hyaluronidase is injected with needles you may have some swelling, itching, redness, bruising and tenderness in the area. These should all subside over the next 48-72 hours. Mild swelling and bruising may continue for up to 2 weeks.
Allergic Reaction:
A small percentage of patients have been found to have an anaphylactic reaction to Hyalase which if untreated can have serious consequences. If you have a known allergy to bee or wasp stings then there is a chance that you might be allergic. Your practitioner should have the appropriate emergency medications to manage an anaphylactic emergency. At ReNu we ensure a patch test is performed prior to any treatment and have the necessary medications and skills to manage an emergency allergic reaction.
